EXCAVATING SOLID COURAGE /2009 The point of departure for this body of work is about seeking greater depth of understanding, and excavating inner resources. I followed this process in four stages: writing a poem and creating a dance about it; dancing the poem, on the canvas on which I intended to make the artwork, while wrapped in gauze; using photos of the dance; and integrating them into the artwork on paper and canvas. The poem reads as follows: I am excavating solid courage, Ambivalent spiralling, Pushing in the direction of clarity. I am contemplating, Unfolding the balance, Containing nurturing love, Shaping me. The act of weaving is the integration of containing and nurturing, excavating and contemplating through the process of art-making, while pushing the paper to its limit by distressing the surfaces of the artworks. The use of gauze is a metaphor for vulnerability, healing and protection, extracting courage from within. The art form of dance is a metaphor for moving and unfolding, while concealing and revealing through using a mirror in some instances. Materials and mixed media: Quink and acrylic ink, pencil, oil paint, bleach, cotton, photographs and gauze on canvas. Size: 153 x 78 cm

EXCAVATING SOLID COURAGE /2009

The point of departure for this body of work is about seeking greater depth of understanding, and excavating inner resources.

I followed this process in four stages: writing a poem and creating a dance about it; dancing the poem, on the canvas on which I intended to make the artwork, while wrapped in gauze; using photos of the dance; and integrating them into the artwork on paper and canvas. The poem reads as follows:

I am excavating solid courage,
Ambivalent spiralling,
Pushing in the direction of clarity.
I am contemplating,
Unfolding the balance,
Containing nurturing love,
Shaping me.
